Description
Following the civil war trail, stop at Clayton’s Store – Sheridan’s Camp historic marker. The buildings at the intersection just north of this market marks the approximate location of Clayton’s Store. This was General Philip H. Sheridan’s headquarters, along with his 9,300 cavalrymen and horse artillerists after they crossed the North Anna River at Carpenter’s Ford about two miles north and camped here in 1864. Little did Sheridan know that two divisions of opposition cavalry, commanded by General Wade Hampton, had also camped nearby!
